AZNAVOUR SQUARE
Garbage is one of the most serious environmental issues in Armenia. With the Nueva Mirada 10-th IFF winner (in category “New Approach” Award to the Best Documentary made by Children and Young People) film Aznavour Square the members of the SunChild Eco-Club in Gyumri investigated the garbage problem in their city. Gyumri, the second most important city in Armenia, was once famous for its interesting architecture and urban quality. But today the city is littered with garbage, even the central Aznavour Square looks like a dump. The garbage already causes diseases among the citizens, in particular, among children, but Gyumri’s municipality ignores the situation and refuses to act. The members of the local SunChild Eco-club try in their often very sarcastic film to explore how this ignorant attitude goes along with the fact that many citizens are forced to spend their life in dilapidated houses, under conditions beyond any human dignity.

SunChild Eco-Club of Gyumri
SunChild Eco-Club of Gyumri was founded in 2006 by FPWC as a part of SunChild Eco-Club Network in the frames of SunChild Environmental Education Program, initiated by the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets. Kids of the age of 12-16 attend this center of environmental education where they learn the most diverse range of environmental subjects. Under the supervision of professional filmmakers, photographers and artists the young members of the Eco-Club learn to create nature and wildlife photos as well as to shoot films on the local environmental problems.
